Australia called up Uruguay-born veteran striker Bruno Fornaroli, who could make his debut in the 2022 World Cup qualifying match against Japan, as long as the documentation is finished on time.
The 34-year-old is one of 27 men called up for the match against the four-time Asian champion in Sydney, on March 24, and for the clash with Saudi Arabia in Jeddah, five days later.
Australia needs to win both matches to ensure automatic qualification for this year's World Cup in Qatar, while Japan will confirm its pass if it defeats the Australians.
Fornaroli, a Perth Glory player, represented Uruguay in the U17 category, but recently obtained Australian nationality and his documentation has been sent to FIFA so that he can play for the Australian absolute.
Australia coach Graham Arnold anticipated that the petition should be resolved before the match against Japan.
“Over the past few years, Bruno has been a star of the A-League (Australian championship) and has a reputation for having a winning and fighting mentality,” Arnold said.
“He's a great person and it's great to have him in the call,” he added.
Graham Arnold will not be able to count on the creative star of his team, Aaron Moy, who was left out after having tested positive for covid-19.
