Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov took a flight to Beijing on Wednesday but the plane returned to Moscow when it was already more than halfway through the flight, German newspaper Bild reported Thursday.

The newspaper reported that the ship returned to the Russian capital when it was over Novosibirsk, in Siberia, having already traveled 2,800 kilometers.

Bild points to two possible explanations. “The world is puzzled: didn't Beijing want to receive Putin's foreign minister or did Putin order him to return because the house is on fire?” , he wondered.

At the moment, the Russian government has not referred to the flight or confirmed that the head of Russian diplomacy has been on board.

The Flight Aware page, which monitors flights around the world, points out that a plane left Vnukovo airport in Moscow and returned to the Russian capital almost eight hours later.

It was 7 hours and 38 minutes in which the plane registered 074 reached Siberia and returned to Europe.

Although the speed and height chart points to a possible landing in Novosibirsk, the record does not mark any stopover, but only takeoff and landing in the capital.

The German newspaper speculated that the Chancellor's alleged return could be related to Joe Biden's speech in which he branded Vladimir Putin a “war criminal” and announced a millionaire military package in support of Ukraine. However, that message was delivered when the plane was already back in Moscow.

Also on the eve, Putin claimed that the “military operation” in Ukraine is “a success”, and that he will not let this country become a “platform” for “aggressive actions” against Russia. “The operation proceeds successfully, strictly in accordance with the pre-established plans,” he stated on television.
