193 members of the UN General Assembly on Tuesday adopted a resolution on supporting bicycles as an instrument to combat climate change.
The resolution proposed by Turkmenistan was adopted unanimously, it is not mandatory at the General Assembly.
It requires “the integration of bicycles into public transport, rural and urban environments, developed countries and developing countries”.
According to the resolution, increasing the stimulation of bicycle use and increased road safety will help achieve “sustainable development, including greenhouse gas emissions reduction”.
More specifically, the resolution calls on Member States to “pay special attention to the use of bicycles in through development strategies, including bicycle exchange services” and “in national, regional and international programs and development policies” where possible.
