The International Court of Justice (ICJ) will deliver on Wednesday in The Hague the verdict on the lawsuit filed by the Kiev government, which asks the highest UN court to order Russia to immediately cease the invasion of Ukraine.
The ICJ will rule at a hearing beginning at 16h00 (15h00 GMT) on an urgent request from Ukraine filed days after the start of the Russian invasion on 24 February.
The Kiev government believes that Russia illegally justified its invasion by alleging a false genocide against Russian-speaking populations in the Ukrainian regions of Donetsk and Lugansk.
Ukraine wants the ICJ, created in 1946 to resolve disputes between States, to adopt emergency measures, known as precautionary measures, to order Russia to “immediately suspend military operations.”
“Russia must be arrested, and the court has a role to play in preventing it,” Ukraine's representative Anton Korynevych said at a hearing.
In nearly three weeks of conflict, more than three million people have fled Ukraine. The Russian and Ukrainian delegations resumed talks on Tuesday as Russian attacks on Kiev escalate and the offensive spreads across the country.
