The United States will sell F-15 fighters to Egypt, a US general told Congress on Tuesday despite concerns about the human rights situation in Washington.
“For Egypt, I think we have good news in that we will be offering F-15 (fighter aircraft), which was a long and difficult task.” Frank McKenzie, the head of the US military in the Middle East, told the Senate Committee.
Officials have not provided details about the sale, and the State Department, which must approve it, has not yet officially reported it to Congress.
“We do not talk about the transfer of weapons or the possibility of selling weapons until it is notified to Congress,” said Ned Price, a spokesman for the State Department.
In January, the United States announced the approval of two major sales of military equipment to Egypt, including air transport and radar systems.
Last year, the State Department suspended $130 million in military aid to Egypt due to the human rights situation in the country, and several lawmakers urged President Joe Biden to stop selling and military aid to Cairo until the balance sheet improved.
