
Until March 17, the 11th Gonzalo Vidal International Latin American Music Festival “America Viva” will be held. In this new edition there are more than 10 free events, including master classes and concerts from the Bellas Artes Foundation.
This edition is attended by a group of pianists who stand out for their contributions to the development and dissemination of Latin American music.Some members are Costa Rica, Manuel Matarita Benegas, Guatemala, Alfonso Hernandez, Colombia, Andres Gomez Bravo, John Alexander Moncada, Sandra Arboleda, and Christian Restrepo.
In addition, the saxophonist, producer and clarinet teacher Jonny Pasos and the Colombian Youth Symphony Orchestra perform under the direction of Maestro Carlos Erajotchari, who is also a violinist.
The opening concert will take place on March 15 at 7 p.m., at the Compama Theater (Cl 48 # 43 - 87), where pianists Alfonso Hernandez and Andres Gomez Bravo perform solo concerts and four hands.
The next night, but at Paranif (Cra 44 # 48 - 72) at the University of Antioquia, at 7 pm on March 16, they will perform Manuel Matarita and Christian Restrepo in a concert for soloists and four hands.
Finally, the festival closes at 7 p.m. on March 17, with a concert featuring pianists John Alexander Moncada, Alfonso Hernandez, Andres Gomez Bravo and Christian Restrevo at Palacio de Bellas Artes. Similarly, the Colombian Youth Symphony Orchestra and saxophonist Johnny Passos completes the lineup.
The academic component of the festival is held at the Palace of Fine Arts and Jazz Club in Beethoven Hall and consists of three master classes and conferences.

It is worth mentioning that, according to FUBA, the festival “aims to promote a space for the development of music in the field of interpretation, composition and investigation, and will be a platform for artistic circulation that has a cultural impact on the city and its inhabitants.”
It was named after the Colombian poet and composer Gonzalo Vidal, who was born in Popayán in 1863.
Manuel Matarita Benegas (1972) is a Costa Rican pianist recognized in his country for his work as a soloist and pianist. He was recently selected as a member of the 2022 Cohort of Global Leaders Program, a professional certification for social entrepreneurship, cultural management and educational leadership.
In addition, he is a professor at the School of Music Arts and Director of the Graduate Degree of Arts at the University of Costa Rica, President of the WPTA-COSTA RICA (World Association of Piano Teachers), and founding director of the Costa Rican Pianist Conference, an annual event held in San Jose, which began in 2014.
He is the author of popular Costa Rican songs that express interest in Costa Rica and the Ibero-American repertoire. Similarly, his repertoire includes record production. Una Milpa y Buenos Guyes, Confidencias, Evo Casion, Flores del Corazon y Ano Lanza and, more recently, Portraitos with trumpeter Juan Carlos Meza.
Alfonso Hernández (1991) is a Guatemalan pianist who is currently completing his PhD in music studies at the University of Maryland and explores Guatemalan piano literature of the 20th and 21st centuries in his thesis project.
