BRUSSELS (AP) — The European Union has imposed sanctions on Chelsea football club owner Roman Abramovich as part of a new package of measures against Russia.
The EU included the Russian billionaire in its updated list of individuals who will have their assets frozen and banned from traveling because of their role in the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Abramovich, 55, was already sanctioned by British Prime Minister Boris Johnson's government last week. Seven wealthy Russians, including the aluminum magnate, saw their goods frozen under Russian sanctions in response to the invasion. Abramovich was also suspended as director of Chelsea.
The EU said that Abramovich “has had privileged access to the (Russian) president and maintained very good relations with him. This connection with the Russian president has helped her maintain her important wealth.”
