The exciting boxing event of the Southeast Asian Games will be one of the next highlights in our continent which will take place in Hanoi, Vietnam on May 16-22. Many of the region’s stars registered to attend in the upcoming Southeast Asian Games including medalists from the big championships.
The event was postponed from 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic but the local National Olympic Committee and all of the organizers are ready to host the re-scheduled competition including boxing too. Eleven countries have the right to participate in the Southeast Asian Games, these are Brunei, Cambodia, East Timor, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
There is always a big rivalry between Thailand and the Philippines and these countries are the most successful ones in the history of the Games. Vietnam’s boxing life developed rapidly in recent years especially in women’s boxing therefore the host country can expect good results in front of the home crowd.
The first competition day in the boxing event is May 16 at the BacNinh Gymnasium while the finals are scheduled on May 22. Athletes who were born between 1982 and 2003 are eligible to participate in the Southeast Asian Games.
The female boxers can attend in six weight categories while the male athletes are able to fight for seven titles in Hanoi. Each of the National Federation can bring a maximum number of five women and six men boxers to the Southeast Asian Games.
The first Southeast Asian Games was held in Bangkok in 1959 and until today already thirty editions have been held in the region. Vietnam hosted the SEA Games first in 2003 and Hanoi can welcome all of the participants of the multisport event after 19 years of hiatus.
