Turkish Athletes Charged with Doping
Two Turkish athletes, including a London gold medalist, are charged with doping.
Nick Davies, a spokesman for the International Association of Athletics Federations, told the Associated Press that Aslı Çakır Alptekin and Nevin Yanıt both had doping violations.
Alpetkin won gold in the women’s 1500m while Yanit was fifth in the women’s 100m hurdles.
Davies said abnormal values were found in Alpetkin’s biological passport, used to track an athlete throughout their career, and Yanit had "multiple positive findings following target tests carried out in-competition and out-of-competition."
If Alpetkin is found guilty, she would lose her medal. The Turkish Athletics Federation will now hear their cases.
Ugur Erdener, president of the Turkish National Olympic Committee, said: "Turkey is ready to fulfill its responsibilities in helping to eradicate it from world sport. The Turkish NOC will continue to intensify our own efforts to root out cheats in Turkish sport."
IOC, WADA Gene Doping Symposium Scheduled
The IOC and WADA will meet June 5-6 in Beijing for their fourth symposium on gene doping.
Speaking to the Associated Press, Arne Ljungqvist, said: "there have been scientific studies which are quite promising," in the field of gene doping. "We feel it's time to review this within the context of a small symposium of specialists."
"Quite some progress has been made in terms of outlining the scientific basis for analysis of gene doping. We are moving. It's promising."
Gene doping is defined by WADA as: "the non-therapeutic use of cells, genes, genetic elements, or of the modulation of gene expression, having the capacity to improve athletic performance."
IOA Submits Negotiation List
Four representatives of the Indian Olympic Association will discuss with the IOC ways to lift the IOA suspension on May 15.
IOA president VK Malhotra will lead the delegation. Joining him are World Squash Federation president N Ramachandran as well as Tarlochan Singh and S Raghunathan, both national federation leaders.
The IOC must approve the list, sent on Friday, before they can go to Lausanne for the talks.
Qantas Renews AOC Sponsorship
Airline Qantas will continue to fly the Australian Olympic Team through the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympics. The deal was announced at a cocktail reception as part of the Australian Olympic Committee’s Annual General Meeting in Sydney.
"We’ve been strong supporters of the Australian Olympic Team for over 60 years because we believe in the values the Olympic Games represent," said Alan Joyce, Qantas Chief Executive. "It’s an honour to carry the Team home after they have done our nation proud."
Estonia Sets Sochi Target
Estonia hopes to send 25-30 athletes to the Sochi Olympics.
Estonia Olympic Committee president Neinar Seli made the announcement Thursday, saying 11 athletes have already qualified for the Games.
The NOC also signed sponsorship deals with several companies through the 2016 Olympics. EMT, Elion, ERGO, Ilves Extra, JCDecaux, Monton, NIKE, Olympic Casino and Silberauto are the sponsors.
