
(ATR)Sheikh Ahmad, president of the Olympic Council of Asia and the Association of National Olympic Committees, says his organizations are sending funds to the people of Nepal.
During the 66th meeting of the OCA executive board, Ahmad announced that the IOC, Olympic Solidarity, ANOC and OCA had all agreed to provide funds for the South Asian country.
Nepal was hit by a devastating earthquake on April 25.The death toll has topped 8,000 and thousands have been left injured, BBC News reports.
The Nepal National Olympic Committee was formed in 1962 and officially recognized by the IOC in 1963.
Around the Rings has been unsuccessful in its efforts to contact the Nepal NOC, which is led by president Dhruba Bahadur Pradhan.
Nepal has competed in 11 Summer Olympic Games and in three Winter Games. However, the country has yet to win an Olympic medal.
The Bridgestone Group, a TOP sponsor, plans to donate approximately $46,000 through the Red Cross to support relief efforts in Nepal.
In a statement released earlier this month, Bridgestone said, "We would like to express its deepest condolences and sympathy to the victims and those who lost loved ones as a result of the Nepal earthquake.
"As a result of doing business in Nepal for more than 50 years, the Bridgestone Group shared a deep connection with the country and its people.
"The Bridgestone Group and its more than 144,000 employees worldwide sincerely hopes for a swift recovery of the people and the areas impacted by this devastating natural disaster."
Bridgestone announced its official sponsorship of the Olympic Games in June of last year.The Tokyo-based tire and rubber company will be a TOP Olympic partner through the 2024 Summer Games.
Niva Shrestha, a representative of the Canadian Paralympic Committee whose family is from Nepal, helped set up a fund for relief efforts in the country.
Over the next 40 days, Shrestha hopes to raise at least $15,000 for the "Nepal Earthquake Fund." Click here to donate.
