(ATR) Milan Cortina 2026 turns to an experienced journalist as its new communications director.
The organizing committee for the 2026 Winter Games announced on Friday that Andrea Monti will begin his tenure on June 22.
A native of Milan, the 65-year-old Monti has spent the last 10 years as Editor in Chief of La Gazzetta dello Sport, Italy's leading sports daily.
Before that he held the same position at magazines and newspapers such as Panorama, Sette, GQ, and Oggi.
"The arrival of a professional with the competence, experience and authority of Andrea Monti greatly enriches our team on the road to the 2026 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games,"Vincenzo Novari, CEO of the Milan Cortina Foundation, said in a statement.
"I thank him for having accepted the extraordinary challenge of participating as a leader in this project that, after the pandemic emergency, is even more significant for the country."
Italy was the first European country with a serious outbreak of Covid-19. The government began easing restrictions in early May after a lockdown that lasted two months. The region of Lombardy, which includes Milan, has had the most cases.
More than 34,000 people have died from coronavirus in Italy. Only the United States, Britain and Brazil have reported more.
Amid the pandemic, there will be at least one reason to celebrate next week. The one year anniversary of the IOC choosing Milan-Cortina over Stockholm to host the 2026 Olympics is June 24.
