(ATR) The International Gymnastics Federation will send smaller teams to Tokyo 2020.
The FIG voted to reduce the number of gymnasts in team competition to four by "an overwhelming majority" at the federation’s council meeting in Melbourne on May 16th.
There were five-person teams at London 2012, and Beijing had teams of six in 2008.
According to the FIG website, 24 spaces for male and female gymnasts at Tokyo 2020 are now available. The additional spaces could provide the federation the opportunity to push for additional events or disciplines in Tokyo, as per Olympic Agenda 2020 reforms.
The top nine teams from the 2019 world championships, to be held in Stuttgart, Germany, will qualify for Tokyo 2020.
"Up to two gymnasts from countries already qualified for the team competition would be eligible to compete as all-arounders or on their specialties based on a qualification system that includes results from the continental championships, world cup and world challenge cups," read the FIG website.
Also at the meeting, Stuttgart was selected to host the 2019 world championships over Rotterdam, Netherlands.
