(ATR) Rio de Janeiro Mayor Eduardo Paes says the mood is different in his city since the IOC turned up the heat in April over the slow pace of progress on the 2016 Olympics.
The energetic mayor, 44, elected last year to a second term that includes the Olympics, has become the leading political figure in Brazil associated with the Games. Paes spent hours this week in meetings of the IOC Coordination Commission for Rio 2016, speaking at length as well as listening.
The mayor of Rio de Janeiro is the first Olympic city mayor in a few years to have a key role in staging the Games. In the case of Rio, the city is responsible for construction of most of the venues as well as infrastructure projects such as the BRT - Bus Rapid Transit - and redevelopment of the city’s old Port District.
He talked with Around the Rings Editor Ed Hula about the changes in the city in just a few months that have the IOC expressing confidence in the preparations for the Rio Olympics.
