(ATR) Horacio Muratore is the new president of the International Basketball Association.
The Argentine was elected by acclamation at the FIBA World Congress in Seville on Thursday and will serve until 2019. He succeeds Yvan Mainini, who did not seek another term.
Delegates from the 116 national federations who gathered at the meeting also elected 12 of the new members of the Central Board for the 2014-2019 cycle. Ingo Weiss takes over as FIBA treasurer from the outgoing Manfred Stroher, who retires after more than 40 years of service to FIBA.
The newly-appointed Central Board is scheduled to meet for the first time on Sept. 13 in Madrid on the sidelines of the final weekend of the FIBA Basketball World Cup.
One of the main items on the agenda will be to appoint the NBA representative and players' representative. The Board may also co-opt six additional members.
On Wednesday, FIBA held its final Central Board meeting of the 2010-2014 cycle. The implementation of new governance under the system of regional offices run by FIBA was identified as the main priority for the 2014-2019 term.
FIBA has recruited the Boston Consulting Group to aid these efforts. It’s task is to clarify and align the structure in accordance to the strategy, as well as implementing the changes.
Board members also discussed requests made by national federations.
"On the subject of a review of the basketball rules regarding headgear, because of the importance of the matter, the Central Board decided that it requires further analysis before a final decision is made," FIBA said.
FIBA’s technical and legal commissions will study the issue and make recommendations to the Central Board.
