
(ATR) More than 400 athletes from 61 countries are competing in the IWF Youth World Cup despite the Covid-19 pandemic. Organized by the Peruvian Weightlifting Federation, the online tournament ends on Wednesday.
The virtual competition replaced the suspended traditional meet set for the Peruvian capital of Lima for the same dates of November 11-18.
The "hosts" Peru sat atop the medals table with eight at the end of the second day of competition. Mexico was in second place with Turkey in third and Indonesia in fourth.
Mexico’s CassandraVélez secured three gold medals at 49 kg while her compatriot Antonio Carrazco (61 kg) was first in Snatch and took bronze in the Clean & Jerk and in the final sum. The strong showings byVélez and Carrazco contributed to placing Latin America at the top of the results charts.
On day three of the competition, Luz Buitron added two more medals for Peru. Buitron secured a silver medal in Clean & Jerk and a bronze in total weight in the women's 55 kg, helping Peru finish day three with a total of 10 medals.
Colombia’s Dubaney Sinisterra won two golds and a bronze in the women's 59 kg on day four.
Indonesia’s Riski Juniansyah made headlines on the fourth day of the Youth World Cup by surpassing the world records in the 73 kg category. Juniansyah totaled 325 kilos (gold) breaking his own world record by 18 kilos.
In Snatch, he surpassed his world mark of 139 kilos by lifting 145 kilos (gold). In Clean & Jerk he lifted 180 kilos (gold), the world record for this category is 171 kilos. The world record for the total result is 307 kilos, in which Juniansyah surpassed by 18 kilos.
On day six, Vanessa Sarno of the Philippines swept the women’s 71 Kg category. Sarno won with a total of 211 kilos (gold): 93 kilos in Snatch(gold); 118 kilos in Clean & Jerk (gold).
Also on day six, Russia’s Maksim Moguchev totaled 335 kilos and won three gold medals.
