(ATR) The latest leadership crisis of the German Football Association (DFB) has reached its finale.
At an extraordinary presidium meeting, the association decided on personnel changes and set the course for a reorganization of the DFB.
"President Fritz Keller has, of his own free decision in responsibility of the office as president, declared his willingness in principle to make his office available after the conclusion of the trial before the DFB Sports Court on May 17, 2021. Secretary General Friedrich Curtius will follow him immediately after an agreement on a cancellation of his employment contract and the handover of his official duties," it states in a press release.
Keller came under fire last month after comparing DFB vice president Rainer Koch to the notorious Nazi-era judge Roland Freisler during a federation meeting.
Keller apologized for the remark but the DFB's regional and state officials gave him a vote of no confidence. Keller refused to resign at that time.
Until the next new elections, which are expected to take place at the beginning of 2022, the two 1st Vice Presidents Rainer Koch and Peter Peters will be in charge. For Koch, his career in the DFB will end after the elections. He will not run again for the office of 1st Vice President Amateurs at the next Ordinary Congress. Also treasurer Stephan Osnabrügge will not run again.
Peters and Koch will temporarily act as interim presidents with equal standing following the resignation of Keller in order to bring the association into calm waters as quickly as possible together with the presidium. Deputy Secretary General Heike Ullrich will temporarily take over Curtius' responsibilities in business areas after his resignation.
Keller took over the federation presidency in 2019. The previous three DFB presidents had been forced out of office amid financial scandals.
The DFB is the world's biggest single sports federation with more than seven million registered members.
