Lausanne, Switzerland, 8 October 2018 – Eight new International Federations (IFs) are adopting .sport domain names, delivered by GAISF.
The latest to join the ever-growing list of .sport pioneers are: the International Waterski & Wakeboard Federation (IWWF), International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF), International Netball Federation (INF), International Dragon Boat Federation (IDBF), World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC), World Karate Federation (WKF), World DanceSport Federation (WDSF) and International Padel Federation (FIP).
By adopting the .sport domain name, stakeholders in the sports movement are carving out a distinct, authentic and highly visible brand in the crowded and complex digital world. The use of .sport gives a greater degree of visibility and searchability and, because of the criteria applied by GAISF, confers approval and acceptance within the global sports family.
More than 100 other global brands, media agencies, event organisers, cities and clubs have applied for the .sport domain since the opening of the application process on 4 September.
Portfolios are available to IFs, which offer a comprehensive range of domain names that can be used for events and disciplines, by athletes and national federations in more than 25 languages. Domains are secured by a "watch system", which informs the owner of any tentative applications by third parties wishing to acquire names similar to the brand in question.
GAISF Head of Digital Pierre Germeau said:
"It’s exciting to see so many IFs apply for a .sport extension and present their ideas for maximising the benefits that the domain offers. It is becoming clear, across the entire sports movement, that .sport offers a respected and trustworthy online presence that can be tailored to the individual needs of the federation, organisation, brand or team."
Sports organisations, companies and individuals throughout the wider sports world will have the opportunity to apply for their own exclusive extensions until 6 November, through https://start.sport or one of GAISF’s accredited providers of .sport registration services. From January 2019, the extension will then be open for general availability (acceptance still subject to approval from GAISF).
