(ATR) Mixed gender teams could compete in the four-man bobsleigh competition at the 2018 Winter Olympics.
On Thursday, the International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation (FIBT) announced mixed-gender teams are able to enter "four-man" bobsleigh event.
To enter the Olympic Program, mixed-gender bobsleigh events need approval from the IOC Executive Board.
"We follow the spirit and movements of our time,"Ivo Ferriani, FIBT President, said in a statement. "There is a strong belief in the FIBT that men and women can compete together in four-man.
"Therefore the Executive Committee decided to support equal opportunities for men and women in that discipline."
Two-time Olympic gold medalist from Canada Kaillie Humphries already said she hopes to pilot a four-man bobsleigh pushed by three male teammates in the upcoming season.
Mixed gender events are growing in popularity with both Winter and Summer Olympic federations. Sochi 2014 was the first Olympics with mixed gender events. Biathlon, figure skating, and luge all made their Olympic debut in Sochi.
