Defending champion Jacqueline Lölling with first win of the season at BMW IBSF World Cup Anna Fernstaedt in second with best ever result, Flock and Channell tied for third place
Königssee (RWH) Defending World Cup Champion in Women’s Skeleton Jacqueline Lölling (GER) celebrated her first win of the season at the BMW IBSF World Cup in Königssee (GER). In the penultimate race of the 2020/2021 season, the Olympic silver medallist stood at the top of the podium after setting the best time in the second run.
In second place, 0.47 seconds behind winner Lölling, Anna Fernstaedt (CZE) surprised with her best World Cup result and the first podium finish of a skeleton athlete from the Czech Republic.
On third place at Königssee, World Cup leader Janine Flock from Austria and Jane Channell from Canada (both 0.63 seconds behind) were tied to the hundredth of a second after two runs. Janine Flock has thus been on the podium in all of the seven World Cups so far this season. For Jane Channell, it was her first podium finish in more than three years in her first World Cup start this winter. She last stood on the World Cup podium in November 2017 when she finished second in Whistler (CAN).
The second run in Koenigssee was extremely exciting: the two leaders after the first run, European Champion Elena Nikitina from Russia and World Champion Tina Hermann (GER) fell far behind after nearly crashing in the labyrinth. In the first run, Tina Hermann had set a new track record with 50.93 seconds. Nikitina finished fifth, Hermann tenth.
For the first time, Brogan Crowley from Great Britain made it into the top ten in the BMW IBSF World Cup at Königssee. In her fifth ever World Cup race, the 2018 Europe Cup overall winner finished ninth.
In the overall ranking of the BMW IBSF World Cup, Janine Flock (AUT, 1485 points) clearly extended her lead. At the World Cup final on her home track in Innsbruck, the Austrian now needs 80 points, corresponding to 18th place, for her second overall victory after 2015. Tina Hermann (GER, 1339) remains second overall ahead of defending World Cup Champion Jacqueline Lölling (GER, 1321).
