ANOC today has confirmed that the results obtained by women’s -50kg beach wrestler, Ms. Miesinnei Genesis of Nigeria, and men’s +90kg beach wrestler, Mr. Pouya Rahmani of Iran, at the ANOC World Beach Games Qatar 2019 have been disqualified due to both athletes being found guilty of anti-doping rule violations (ADRVs).
As a result, the gold medal won by Mr. Rahmani in the +90kg beach wrestling competition and the silver medal won by Ms. Genesis in the women’s -50kg beach wrestling competition are forfeited and will be returned to ANOC for reallocation. The ANOC Executive Council will now approve the reallocation of medals and results and provide further details in due course.
Both athletes’ cases were referred to the ANOC Disciplinary Commission for hearing and adjudication in line with Article 7.6 of the ANOC Anti-Doping Rules in December 2020. The Commission informed both athletes of the decision orally following the conclusions of their hearings. A written Decision and Reasons was subsequently issued and sent to each athlete, from which date each athlete had 21 days to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), if they so wished. Neither athlete chose to appeal the decisions before the deadline of 11 February 2021.
Mr. Rahmani’s case was heard on 9 December 2020 and it was concluded that the athlete committed a doping offence under Article 2.1 of the ANOC Anti-Doping Rules. Mr. Rahmani’s in-competition urine sample, analysed by the WADA accredited anti-doping laboratory in Doha, Qatar, disclosed the presence of stanozolol and its metabolite 4-hydroxystanozolol, 16-B-hydroxystanozolol, a prohibited substance under WADA’s 2019 Prohibited List. The analysis of the athlete’s B sample confirmed the A sample analysis.
Ms. Genesis’s case was heard on 17 December 2020 where it too was concluded that the athlete committed a doping offence under Article 2.1 of the ANOC Anti-Doping Rules. The A sample of the athlete’s in-competition test disclosed the presence of furosemide, a prohibited substance under WADA’s 2019 Prohibited List. The analysis of the athlete’s B sample confirmed the A sample analysis.
In accordance with Article 7.1 of the ANOC Anti-Doping Rules, the complete files of both cases have been sent to United World Wrestling, for its purposes as it may deem appropriate.
