The championships began October 5 with a total of 243 boxers in 10 weight classes competing throughout the 10-day event. There are 23 qualification spots to the Rio 2016 Olympics up for grabs as well as the coveted title of world champion.
Before the semifinal matches began Sunday, AIBA president C.K. Wu along with vice president Serik Konakbayev and Qatar Boxing Federation president Yousuf Ali Al Kazim announced details of the new Heads Up initiative designed to protect boxers from concussions and facial cuts.
The program has resulted in zero concussions at these championships as well as a large reduction in facial cuts from the last world championships.
The final round of boxing begins Wednesday as 20 boxers remain in the running to become world champions. All boxers left in the competition have already earned their spot in the Rio Olympics.
The competition concludes Thursday, October 15.
