The International University Sports Federation (FISU) and the local Organising Committee of
the 2020 University World Cup 3x3 Basketball have agreed to postpone this year’s tournament,
which was scheduled to be held from 26-29 November 2020, in Xiamen, People’s Republic of
China.
The decision to postpone the tournament to the same period next year was taken following
several discussions between FISU and the Organising Committee, and a final approval from the
FISU Steering Committee on 17 April.
"As you know, the selection of teams for the University World Cup is done on the basis of
continental Qualification Tournaments, which are organised by our Continental University
Sports Federations," wrote FISU Secretary General-CEO Eric Saintrond in a communication to
member federations.
"The Qualification Tournaments normally take place during the Continental Games or
Continental Championships. Unfortunately in 2020, the continental federations are unable to
organise their Games or Championships due to the global COVID-19 situation. Hence, this does
not allow us to select the teams for the world finals of the University World Cup 3x3 this year."
The event has been postponed to late 2021, and will remain in the city of Xiamen, which has
hosted it since its inception in 2015. The exact dates will be announced later.
