The Colombian Baseball Federation (FCB) has appointed Luis Felipe Urueta as manager for the upcoming 2023 World Baseball Classic.
A native of Barranquilla, Colombia, Urueta, 41, is a former switch-hitting major league outfielder who coached Colombia during the 2013 and 2017 World Baseball Classic qualifiers.
Urueta, is the current first base coach for the Arizona Diamondbacks, who began his coaching career in 2007 with the Arizona minor league organization and became part of the coaching staff in the 2018 season. He became bench coach for the Diamondbacks during the 2020 season.
Urueta managed Colombia in the 2013 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers, then led the team in qualifying for the 2017 World Baseball Classic.
He guided the team past former WBC teams Panama and Spain to a spot in the 2017 World Baseball Classic - Colombia’s first trip to the World Baseball Classic
He also worked as third base coach for the World Team in the All-Star Futures Game and took the Tigres del Licey to the Dominican Republic winter league finals.
José Mosquera, minor league coach of the Pittsburgh Pirates and manager of the Caimanes de Barranquilla (champion of the 2022 Caribbean Series), will be Urueta’s assistant.
The FCB also named WBSC Baseball Division board member Jimmy Char as the team’s general manager. Florida Marlins and San Francisco Giants World Series Champion, Edgar Rentería, will act as sports manager.
Colombia will compete in Group C with the USA, Canada, Mexico and the winner of the tie scheduled for Panama in October.
