Ice hockey’s top countries will go head to head in 2024 as the World Cup of Hockey is set to make a return to the ice.
The National Hockey League (NHL) and the NHL Players Association have agreed to bring back the tournament, likely in February 2024, the league announced.
The games will be played in North America over 17 days and will feature at least eight powerhouse hockey nations.
“We still want to play one pool in Europe, a preliminary round pool in Europe and a preliminary round pool in North America and move the semifinals and the final to a different city in North America likely,” NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said.
“I think that short list would universally encompass more traditional hockey markets.”
The last time the World Cup of Hockey was held was in Canada in 2016 before the beginning of the NHL season. That edition featured Canada, Czech Republic, Finland, Russia, Sweden, U.S., Team Europe (players from other European countries) and Team North America (Canadian and American players 23-years-old and younger).
Canada won the best-of-three final 2-0 over Team Europe.
NHL players were denied the opportunity to compete at the Beijing 2022 Winter Games due to COVID-19 concerns. The most recent time they played in the Olympic Games was Sochi 2014.
