After a disappointing T-68th finish at the 150th Open Championship at St. Andrews two weeks ago, Sergio Garcia told reporters he “didn’t feel loved” and was going to resign his membership from the DP World Tour.
“I have what I have and I’m very happy with it and I want to enjoy it to the fullest,” Garcia said at the time. “If I don’t play big events like majors and the Ryder Cup, then I don’t play them, but honestly I don’t care much either.”
It appears the Spaniard does care, because Garcia has changed his tune regarding membership with the DP World Tour.
“I’m going to hold off on that,” Garcia told ESPN. “I had a couple of good conversations with guys on the DP World Tour.
“I want to at least see what’s happening when the Ryder Cup qualification starts. See what kind of rules and eligibilities they have. If I agree with what they are, I’ll definitely keep playing whatever I can on the tour and try to qualify for the Ryder Cup team.”

Garcia is currently ranked 70th in the world and said he told DP World Tour CEO Keith Pelley he wants to keep being a member and still be eligible to play in the Ryder Cup. Pelley didn’t offer Garcia any assurance he’ll be eligible for the team, even with his latest change of heart.
He’ll be 43 when the 2023 Ryder Cup tees off outside Rome, so his spot on Team Europe is far from a sure thing, especially given his commitment to the LIV Golf Series.
The 2017 Masters champion has been a member of every Ryder Cup team since 1999, minus one. He’s been on six winning teams and his record of 25-13-7 is unmatched. He holds the record for points scored for Europe with 28.5. If he doesn’t qualify for the team, he would certainly be high on the list of potential captain’s picks.
The captain for Team Europe is unknown after Henrik Stenson was stripped of the job when he joined LIV last week.
“What they did to Henrik, it’s a little bit sad,” said Garcia.
