The Argentine Olympic Committee (COA) has a new president. Mario Moccia succeeded this Monday Gerardo Werthein, who leaves the position he held for 12 years.
“I want to thank the confidence and say that these twelve years we shared with Gerardo Werthein were very important for me and I hope to continue along the same path during my administration,” said Moccia after being elected in a special assembly held in Buenos Aires.
“I am very happy to be able to preside over this organization that I love so much and with this progressive, modern and advanced Statute that Gerardo Werthein proposed to us and that today allows the Argentine Olympic Committee, in my opinion, to be the most modern in the world”, added the new head of the Argentine Olympism.
Werthein, who is a member of the IOC executive committee, was appointed honorary president of the COA, which maintains Alicia Masoni de Morea as first vice-president and adds former cyclist Walter Pérez - gold medalist in Beijing 2008 - as second vice-president. Former judoka Paula Pareto, gold medalist in Rio 2016, joined the athletes’ commission.
Moccia, with long experience in sports leadership in handball, is also first vice-president of Panam Sports and the South American Sports Organization (Odesur).
The new president promised to “articulate with a comprehensive spirit the next four years taking into account gender equality, the representation of athletes and the different summer and winter sports disciplines”.
Werthein, who in his 12 years in office carried out a decisive modernization of Argentine Olympism, praised his successor: “Your loyalty, your humility, your wisdom and your knowledge are what make you the new president of the Argentine Olympic Committee. I am sure that you will have a great career and that you will lead this team to do things even better and more successfully than I did”.
Werthein’s achievements during his tenure include Buenos Aires hosting the 2013 session that elected Thomas Bach as IOC president and Tokyo as host of the 2020 Games, and the celebration of the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in the Argentine capital.
