(ATR) Atlanta organizers recruited an elite corps of executive level volunteers to help individual National Olympic Committees during the 1996 Games. After two years of training, they were ready to meet their teams.
Around the Rings Publisher Sheila S. Hula was one of those volunteers.
Her team – the tiny Pacific Island nation of Vanuatu – got a full blown dose of Southern hospitality immediately upon arrival. The four athletes arrived ahead of their officials. But according to the rules, they could not check into their housing until team officials arrived, which meant they would not have had a place to sleep.
No problem. Ron Bolin, the team driver, took them all home to stay the night with him and his wife.
