Miller’s Medal Sets U.S. Records
Bode Miller won the men’s super combined event Sunday, setting a U.S. record for medals won by the team, and most won by an individual.
The U.S. skiing team has won eight medals at these Olympics, with Miller contributing three, one more than any other U.S. skier had won at a single Games.
Miller started the day in seventh place received a boost when Norway’s Aksel Lund Svindal was disqualified in the slalom event. Svindal beat Miller in the downhill and super-g events.
More medals could be coming Miller and the U.S.’s way. The men’s and women’s slalom and giant slalom are still on the schedule, with Miller skiing in the slalom event.
Canadian Figure Skater Mourning
Canadian figure skater Joannie Rochette says she plans to compete this week – at the same time she mourns her mother. Therese Rochette, 55, died Saturday night, hours after arriving in Vancouver from Montreal to watch her daughter skate. A heart attack is reported as a cause of death.
William Thompson, CEO of Skate Canada, said that Rochette still plans to skate.
"We met with her this morning and she intends to compete at the Games. We will, of course,support any further decisions she makes in the upcoming days. She is very determined and is focused on competing here."
The women’s skate program begins Tuesday.
VANOC Settles into Routine
With gorgeous weather in Vancouver, and no major issues arising, VANOC seems to be settling into an easy routine during the final days of the Games.
Today’s press briefingseemed to confirm this. The daily briefing lasted less than half an hour, with only a few questions asked.
Briefings at the start of the Games lasted for more than an hour with dozens of questions.
Kiss My Medal, Kiss Olympics Goodbye
Scotty Lago has left the Olympic Village after a somewhat risque photo came to light.
Lago, who won bronze in the snowboard halfpipe event, was seen apparently using his medal to pick-up a young woman. He apologized to the USOC and voluntarily left the Village.
In a Tweet Saturday, Lago said: "Got home this morning to all my homies. Such a good Olympic experience. Keeping my medal in a safe spot for now haha."
