After Barack Obama and Angela Merkel stayed away from the Sochi Olympics, it looks like they plan to drop Sochi as the host for a G8 summit amid the venues from the 2014 Winter Olympics.
Originally scheduled to take place June 4 and 5 at the Gorki Media Center, the meeting’s future was cast into uncertainty on Thursday.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel said that the G8, a group of the world’s eight largest industrial countries, would not meet until the situation with Crimea is resolved.
The group includes Russia, but for now it would appear that the G8 is down to G7 as a result of the political and military crisis that sprung up in the days following the Sochi Olympics.
Earlier in March, the White House posted a statement from the G7 saying they would "suspend" their participation in "activities associated with the planning" of the G8 Summit in Sochi. The statement said they would not resume participation "until the environment comes back where the G8 is able to have meaningful discussion."
The G8 meeting was touted as a significant post-Olympic event by Sochi 2014 organizers during the Games.
