The Tokyo Metropolitan Government has established a new bureau dedicated to preparations for the 2020 Olympics.
Officially set up on Jan. 1, it is charged with formulating a multi-faceted plan for the delivery of the 2020 Games and to provide further impetus to the TMG’s sports administration capabilities.
Monday's announcement comes ahead of the formation of the Tokyo 2020 OCOG, which was originally scheduled to be finalized by the middle of January.
Tokyo 2020 president Tsunekazu Takeda welcomed the TMG's decision to set up the committee "so promptly" after the Japanese capital secured the Games in September "to ensure that the preparation process for the Games proceeds smoothly and seamlessly".
Takeda revealed that the Tokyo 2020 organizing committee, now set to be launched "by the end of February", would forge a close working relationship with the new bureau "and together we will exert our utmost efforts to organize and deliver a truly memorable Games experience, and leave a legacy that will benefit future generations for many years to come".
Tokyo Could Deliver $190 Billion in Economic Effects
Kyodo News International reports the 2020 Summer Olympics will generate "spillover effects" for the Japanese economy "worth up to 20 trillion yen," or approximately 191.4 billion USD.
According to a report in the Kyodo News Agency, the Institute for Urban Strategies published a report on Monday detailing the Games’ economic impact, which the institute says could be worth up to 20 trillion yen. Additionally, the Games could generate "roughly" 1.21 million jobs. Tokyo’s hosting of the Olympics could create "roughly 1.21 million jobs nationwide if the government implements deregulation."
The 2020 Summer Olympics are also expected to push up the country's gross domestic product by around 0.3 percent per year.
