The votes have been tallied, and now it’s official. The name of the pelican mascot for the 2017 World Rowing Championships will be, "Scully".
The name overwhelmingly defeated the other four options, Rowan, Paddles, Oarson and Skylar.
Votes came in from two dozen countries across five continents, including The Czech Republic, Canada, Japan, South Africa and New Zealand.
During the original round of voting, when online users offered their name suggestions via social media and e-mail, "Scully" also was the most popular submission for the pelican.
"We are so incredibly thrilled by the response to the mascot naming competition," said Meredith Scerba, the executive director of the 2017 World Rowing Championships. "We believe such enthusiasm bodes well for the Championships and indicates that excitement is really building for the event."
"Scully" is, of course, based on the word, "scull," a type of boat used in the sport of competitive rowing.
In addition to being ever present during the 2017 World Rowing Championships, "Scully" will make multiple appearances leading up to the regatta. Over the next couple of months, look for him to land at numerous events, including:
●Movie Night at Nathan Benderson Park on February 10th
●Chalk the Park at Nathan Benderson Park on March 5th
●Movie Night at Nathan Benderson Park on March 18th
Later this week, a mascot request form will be published on WRCH2017.com for those interested in booking "Scully" at their school, party, or other functions.
