(ATR) Lausanne’s bid to host the 2020 Youth Olympic Winter Games received a big boost on Tuesday when the state parliament voted in favor of the effort.
State minister of economy and sport Philippe Leuba said the vote was carried out "with great enthusiasm" and that represents "a very strong signal to the world that the Games can mean a lot to citizens.
"It is proof that the concept behind the Youth Olympic Games is a strong one."
The Lausanne city council had already, in March, voted in favor of aiding the 2020 operational budget. Then on Tuesday, 101 of 117 state parliament members lodged votes in favor of subsidizing the bid as well.
In a statement to Around the Rings, a bid spokesperson said, "The objective of Lausanne 2020 is to capture these values that have been developing here for 100 years, to re-define and re-interpret them with the youth of the world in the years leading to the Games and during the Games, to better spread them around the world in a new, innovative way, for the next 100 years."
"This is what Olympism is about," said Leuba.
"We hope to now convince the IOC that their event would be in good hands here."
