
(ATR)Cities hoping to bid for the 2024 Summer Olympics must submit letters of intent to the IOC by Tuesday, Sept. 15.
So far, Hamburg and Rome have submitted paperwork to declare they are bidding for the 2024 Games. Budapest, Paris and Los Angeles will also be in the running. Baku and Toronto are still mulling bids.
With the deadline looming, opponents of the Olympic bid in Toronto are beginning to surface. Last week, former mayor Rob Ford criticized the Olympics, calling the event a "bottomless black hole."
The IOC vote on a host for the 2024 Olympics is taking place in 2017 at the IOC Session in Lima, Peru.
Olympic Anniversary for Atlanta
This Friday marks the 25th anniversary of the city of Atlanta winning the 1996 Summer Olympics.
On Sept. 18, 1990, then IOC president Juan Antonio Samaranch announced Atlanta as the host of the 1996 Games during the IOC Session in Tokyo.
George Hirthler, a leading Olympic bid consultant, spoke with Around the Rings last week about a celebration planned at Centennial Olympic Park to mark the anniversary.
The invitation-only event will gather almost 400 attendees who were involved in Atlanta securing the 1996 Olympics, Hirthler told ATR.
Keynote speaker Billy Payne, who led the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games in 1996, will open the celebration.
This is the first of two major celebrations that are going to take place between 2015 and 2016, Hirthler said. Next year will mark the 20th anniversary of the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.
Cycling World Championships
The 2015 Road Cycling World Championships open in the U.S. city of Richmond, Virginia on Sept. 19.
The International Cycling Union says some 1,000 athletes will compete at this year's championships. Organizers expect 450,000 spectators to come out to watch competition, which ends on Sept. 27.

Canoe Slalom World Championships
The International Canoe Federation is staging the 2015 Canoe Slalom World Championships in London, Sept. 15-20. Some 300 canoe slalom athletes from 55 countries will participate.
This will mark the first time since 1995 that theCanoe Slalom World Championships will take place in the United Kingdom.
The event will also double as a qualifier for the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Rugby World Cup
The 2015 Rugby World Cup opens on Sept. 18 in England.
Throughout the course of competition, cities including Cardiff, Birmingham, Brighton, Exeter, Gloucester, Leeds, Leicester, London, Manchester, Milton Keynes, and Newcastle will host matches.
Twenty teams will compete in the Rugby World Cup this year, which ends on Oct. 31.
OCA General Assembly
The Olympic Council of Asia executive board is meeting and holding a General Assembly in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, Sept. 15-16.
This will mark the 67th meeting of the OCA executive board and the 34th OCA general assembly.
On Sept. 14, ameeting of the OCA finance committee will precede the executive board meeting and assembly.
