(ATR) Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff will oversee her nation’s readiness to host the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympics.
Sharing resources between the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympics will be one of the challenges for Rousseff, whose first term ends in 2015.
A topic of concern for Olympic insiders is how much focus officials in Brazil will have for the Games following the World Cup. Football is the most important part of Brazilian life and people have commented that the World Cup is more important than the Olympics.
Regardless, the government is leading the charge in a massive overhaul of Rio de Janeiro. From sewers to the airport, Rio’s infrastructure still needs huge improvements and the federal government will be a key source of funding and support.
The city is infamous for crime and the federal government is part of the fight to "pacify" the favelas.
With only slightly more than three years until the Olympics and a vast amount of work still at hand, the IOC has continually reminded Brazilian officials time is running out. Rousseff will be a key reason if the work gets done—or if it doesn’t.
