Trampoline Worlds Ready to Jumpstart

All the best jumpers are in France this week for the Trampoline Gymnastics World Championships.

More than 260 athletes from 34 countries trained the past four days at the Les Arènes Sports Complex in Metz.

Competition kicks off Thursday with preliminaries in individual trampoline, tumbling and double mini-trampoline.

Synchronized trampoline starts Friday, and all medals will be awarded by Saturday night.

No team event will be held this year.

Russia, Great Britain, Canada and the U.S. sent the largest delegations.

German Anna Dogonadze is by far the biggest star entering these world championships. The 2004 Olympic gold medalist remains a favorite event at 37 years of age, as does 33-year-old veteran Nikolai Kazak of Belarus.

Spots in London 2012 won’t be at stake until the 2011 worlds in Birmingham, England.

Modern Pentathlon Attempts to Clarify Laser Pistol Use

The modern pentathlon federation says laser pistols will make their Olympic debut at London 2012 after all.

A motion that would have made the technology mandatory at all Olympic qualification competitions as well as the upcoming Summer Games fell short of approval by national member federations Saturday at UIPM’s congress in Riga, Latvia.

The federation said Wednesday in a statement the sport will go ahead with the change anyway.

"Based on UIPM rule ‘B.5.21 (i) the combined event may take place using the laser system’, UIPM can still organize all Olympic Qualification and UIPM competitions using Laser Shooting technology and feels supported to do so by nearly two third of the member federations present at the recent UIPM Congress," the statement reads.

The statement also citesUIPM rule 1.2.3 in its explanation of why modern pentathlon can, and will, use laser pistols in London.

"The rules for category ‘A’ competitions apply also to Olympic Games and Youth Olympic Games, as far as they do not conflict with the Olympic Games Qualification Rules that are negotiated by the UIPM EB with the IOC Executive Committee after each the Olympic Games and Youth Olympic Games for the following Olympiad.

"The future Competition OrganizingCommittees present at the Congress stated that they will organize their competitions using the Laser Shooting technology," the UIPM statement continued. "Therefore there will be a negotiation one by one between the UIPM EB and all Organizing Committees."

The rules change did pass for lower levels of competition. All junior and youth events must use the technology beginning Jan. 1, 2011.
