(ATR) The host of next year’s inaugural European Games will follow up the multi-sport event with another marquee draw the following year.
Formula One’s Grand Prix of Europe will be contested annually on the streets of Baku, Azerbaijan starting in 2016.
"Our location at the crossroads of eastern Europe and western Asia is a new frontier for Formula One racing," said Azad Rahimov, Azerbaijan’s minister of youth and sport.
Rahimov said the deal is "a very significant new chapter" in the country’s ongoing work toward bringing the world’s largest sporting events to the former Soviet republic.
There are hopes that the race will begin in the city’s Azadliq Square.
Formula One CEO Bernie Ecclestone said the race "will pass through interesting and picturesque parts of Baku" and "will meet the current Formula One criteria."
Next year’s European Games will involve 6,000 athletes from all 49 of Europe’s Olympic nations. The event opens on June 12.
