Bahia Capital Receives Olympic Torch

(ATR) The Olympic Torch Relay is making its way through the northeast Brazilian state of Bahia.

(ATR) The Olympic Torch is in the northeast Brazilian city of Salvador.

On May 24 the torch made its way to the state capital of Bahia and one of the Olympic football host cities.In Salvador the torch relaywill go through historic sections of townsuch as the Pelourinho, the Lacerda elevator, Dique do Tororó, where the torch will be carried by rowboat, before finishing at the Farol da Barra lighthouse.

Around 150 torchbearers carried the flame throughout the city, which was the first capital of Brazil. Notable torchbearers include Rio 2016 Olympian in swimmingAllan do Carmo, Paralympic triathlete Marcello Collet and women's football 2004 silver medalist Elaine Moura Estrela.

On May 19 the Rio 2016 Torch relay crossed state lines from Espirito Santos to Bahia entering the Northeast region of the country. The torch will visit nine states in just under a month before moving to the Northern region on June 14.

Alagoas, Bahia, Ceará, Maranhão, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Piauí, Rio Grande do Norte and Sergipe are on the itinerary for this leg of the relay.The first state graced by the Olympic Torch is Bahia. Bahia is the largest of the nine Northeastern states and the fourth largest state in the country by population.

On May 19 the torch visited Teixeira de Freitas and Itamaraju in southern Bahia. Both towns saw local children’s groups greeted the flame’s arrival with musical numbers. Afterwards the torch visited the region where the first Portuguese settlers arrived when discovering Brazil. The torch went to the towns of Santa Cruz Cabralia and Porto Seguro, where a ferry boat ride was commissioned down the Arraial d’Ajuda in Porto Seguro.

The next day the torch traveled to Eunapolis, Itapetinga, and Vitoria da Conquista. To start the relay a military band presented the torch, while Caopeira exhibitions dotted the torch’s journey throughout the day. At the conclusion of the May 20 leg, an exhibition on Brazilian filmmaker Glauber Rocha was done in his hometown of Vitoria da Conquista.

On May 21 fireworks kicked off the arrival of the torch in Itambé, while the towns of Floresta Azul, Ibicarai, Itabuna and Ilheus received the relay. A notable stop on this leg was a fountain in Floresta Azul, which was set up to model the Olympic Torch.

The next day the torch traveled over 250 kilometers (155 miles) northbound in Bahia visiting the towns of Itacare, Camamu, Itubera, Cairu and Valenca on May 22. On May 23 the flame stopped over in Lencois for one day before reaching the state capital of Salvador on May 24.

The torch will be in Bahia until May 26 when the torch makes it way to Pernambuco.
