Mbalula assumed office on 1 November 2010, succeeding Makhenkesi Stofile after previously being appointed deputy minister of police in the cabinet of Jacob Zuma in May 2009.
During his four years in the term, Mbalula has made great strides in sport through various programmes to enhance South African sport at all levels. Among these achievements are: school sports programme where the ministry has donated sport apparel, equipment and attire to encourage all our schools to participate in school sport activities including physical education.
In addition, the ministry has also been involved in the roll-out of outdoor gyms to disadvantaged communities of South Africa, the National Sports plan and the national Sports Indaba.
Says SASCOC CEO, Tubby Reddy, "We are extremely pleased that our Sports Minister has retained his position. This will mean that we are able to continue with the hard work we have already started and are together able to continue taking South African sport to a greater level."
