Last Tuesday, International Women's Day, the Portuguese Olympic Committee paid tribute to 16 women who have breakthrough in the Portuguese sports history as leaders. From Clubs and National Federation Presidents or former Presidents, to other roles in several sports institutions, these 16 women where the stars of the event in which NOC Portugal also granted two awards (Youth and Career) to two other female leaders.
This ceremony was held as part of a conference which subject was "Women Leadership - Paths of Success and Development Perspectives", where the former Olympic Champion and NOC Portugal Vice-President, Rosa Mota was present and spoke of his experience as an athlete.
With an increasingly important role in the sports industry, the Portuguese Olympic Committee could not fail to mark this important date that began to be celebrated in the early twentieth century in the context of women's struggles for better conditions of life and work, as well as voting rights.
Conference "Women Leadership - Paths of Success and Development Perspectives"
The Conference "Women Leadership - Paths of Success and Development Perspectives" opened this event and had two speakers invited: Angela Melo, Director of Youth, Ethics and Sports Division of UNESCO, and Katie Simmonds, Sports Governance and Financial Integrity Officer of ICSS Europe, and Leila Marques, Chairman of the Women and Sport Committee of NOC Portugal and former Paralympic Athlete, the moderator of the conference.
The speakers spoke of their experience and journey in the world of sport, often clashing with some difficulties and discrimination, but having avenged his dream of becoming leaders in an industry that was mostly associated with males.
