(ATR) According to preliminary reports, United States Vice President Mike Pence will travel to South Korea in February for the Winter Olympics in PyeongChang.
U.S. President Donald Trump is expected to make the official announcement within the next 24 hours, according to a spokesperson for the National Security Council.
"President Trump has committed to sending a high-level United States delegation to the Winter Olympics and looks forward to announcing the delegation soon," the spokesperson said according to Reuters.
The expected announcement follows the first high-level diplomatic talks between North and South Korea in two years that were held in the Demilitarized Zone on Jan. 9. North Korea agreed to send a large delegation to the Games featuring state officials, athletes, Olympic officials, performers, a cheer squad and taekwondo demonstrators.
"North Korean participation is an opportunity for the regime to see the value of ending its international isolation by denuclearizing," the NSC spokesperson added.
Pence will likely be joined in South Korea by his wife and Second Lady of the U.S. Karen Pence. A member of President Trump’s family could also attend the Opening Ceremony of the Games on Feb. 9, with reports suggesting either First Lady Melania Trump or daughter Ivanka Trump are likely attendees.
The PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympics will run through Feb. 25.
