(ATR) President of the Pan American Sports Organization (PASO) Julio Maglione tells Around the Rings the organization will hold an extraordinary general assembly Mar. 8-10, 2016 to approve its new constitution. The general assembly will take place in San Salvador, El Salvador.
Maglione says the executive board of PASO decided on the month of March for the assembly following a two-day workshop at the conclusion of the ANOC general assembly in Washington, D.C.
The workshop featured discussions on four different themes: PASO’s structure and administration, games and products, development and marketing and sponsorship & TV.
Moderators also lead discussions regarding a draft of statute revisions that were delivered to each NOC in August.
Michael Chambers, legislative committee president of PASO tells ATR discussions at the forum were "open, frank, and generally positive."
"Different views on many topics, but that was what was hoped for, and everyone’s view was listened to with respect," Chambers says.
He added that the most important take-away from the workshop was a sense of needing to work together.
"Working together, with but through our different views and perspectives, we can build a new and even better PASO in terms of structure, development of our properties, utilization of Olympic and Pan American Solidarity funding, and pursuit of yet untapped opportunities in relation to the exploitation of marketing, TV, and new media rights."
The executive board discussed suggestions brought up by NOCs during the workshop in their meeting on Sunday, according to Maglione.
"We will coordinate the calendar of regional games and competitions in order to reach a good coordination with the world and Olympic calendar, as well as regiment the Pan American Youth Games, Beach Games and Pan American Festival."
Maglione tells ATR other suggestions discussed involved supporting NOCs, such as support to athletes, more development programs, special programs for infrastructure and special programs to NOCs in need of sports infrastructure.
The approval of the constitution at the extraordinary general assembly in March 2016 would allow for PASO to send the constitution to the IOC and ANOC for approval.
If those organizations approve the revisions, PASO would be able to move forward with electing a new president, ending Maglione’s term as the interim chair.
