This weekend Americas powerlifters will have the opportunity to test out the stage for the 2019 Parapan American Games as they take part in the World Para Powerlifting World Cup in Lima.
It will be the first time that the Peruvian capital city stages this type of competition, which also serves as a Lima 2019 Test Event, with some experienced athletes competing.
Argentina’s two-time Paralympian Jose David Coronel will be the one to beat in the men’s up to 72kg. The 32-year-old seeks to bounce back after a poor performance at last year’s Americas Open Championships in Colombia, finishing 12th.
Hosts Peru will be hopeful of landing gold through Neil Garcia Trelles in the men’s up to 59kg. The 45-year-old, who took bronze at Bogota 2018, is looking to reach his best form ahead of the Parapans.
Herbert Aceituno will be another of the top names in attendance at the World Cup.
The Salvadoran had a highly-successful 2018, with golds at the Para Central American Games and Colombia National Competition, as well as silver at the Americas Open Championships.
Lima 2019 President Carlos Neuhaus said: "This competition is an excellent opportunity for every athlete to showcase their strength and help secure qualification slots for the Lima 2019 Parapan American Games.
