LA 2024 today congratulates Los Angeles-based NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory for starting its Cassini spacecraft's Grand Finale dives through Saturn's rings. Cassini’s daring space exploration over the last 20 years exemplifies LA's spirit of innovation and progress that would be put at the service of the Olympic Movement if LA hosts the 2024 Games.
Launched in 1997, Cassini reached Saturn in 2004 after a seven-year journey - not unlike LA 2024’s journey from 2017 to the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Loaded with an array of powerful instruments and cameras, for twenty years Cassini made incredible discoveries in an unexplored region. From now until September Cassini will conduct its Grand Finale: 22 dives through the space between Saturn’s rings.

The California Institute of Technology manages NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, which has helped establish LA's aerospace leadership that includes projects such as America's first Earth-orbiting science satellite, the Space Shuttle and SpaceX rockets.
