(ATR) A former justice minister and ex-Munich 2018 bid official will lead Hamburg’s effort to land the 2024 Games.
Nikolas Hill and Bernhard Schwank will head the bid team from the Hanseatic city.
The German Olympic Sports Confederation and city of Hamburg announced the decision on Tuesday.
Hill, 43, is named managing director. The lawyer is a former minister of justice and equality in the regional government of Hamburg. Schwank is appointed director of sport and international as well as deputy CEO of the bid committee.
A DOSB board member, the 54-year-old Schwank was chief executive of the failed Munich 2018 winter Olympic bid. He is well-known on the international Olympic circuit following his work for Munich 2018 and for the German sports movement over many years. He has held the post of international relations director at the DOSB since December.
"In Nikolas Hill and Bernhard Schwank, we have a powerful team," said DOSB president Alfons Hörmann.
"Mr. Hill brings a lot of experience from the management of complex projects with Hamburg. Mr Schwank has already shaped the Munich Olympic bid significantly and is well connected in international sport."
Other members of the Hamburg 2024 bid committee will be announced in the next few weeks by the DOSB in conjunction with the federal government.
Hill and Schwank will get to work immediately on developing the bidding concept.
Hamburg will compete with Boston, Rome and Paris for the 2024 Olympics. With the IOC’s application deadline set for Sept. 15, other bids could still come from Baku and Budapest.
The IOC will select the 2024 host at the 2017 Session in Lima, Peru.
