(ATR) The Australian government is receptive to a 2028 Olympic bid.
Ten southeast Queensland mayors met with Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott, Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss, and sports minister Sussan Ley on March 18 to explore the possibility of a combined regional Olympic bid for 2028 with Brisbane serving as the main host.
According to Brisbane Lord Mayor Graham Quirk, the three members of the Australian government are open to the idea.
"All of them have said that they would be prepared to look at further information that we put on the table," he said.
"None of us were expecting any more than that today. Had they said they were not interested under any circumstances, then it would have been game over."
The group of mayors are now responsible forworking with the Australian Olympic committee to compile a pre-feasibility proposal.
"We'll be back in Canberra next year and we'll have some detailed work done around pre-feasibility and then we can have a real conversation about what may be involved," Quirk added.
Melbourne is also interested in bidding for the 2028 Olympic Games.

The elections take place November 18, and Abakar Djermah Aumi, president of the Chad Olympic Committee, is also aiming to win them.
