(Bloomberg) -- Volkswagen AG decidirá este trimestre sobre la fabricación de más modelos eléctricos en Estados Unidos, apostando a que el apoyo de la Administración Biden a los vehículos a batería ayudará al fabricante automotriz alemán a volver a la posición que tenía en el mercado hace medio siglo.
“Tenemos una oportunidad histórica de aumentar nuestra participación de mercado en EE.UU.”, dijo el director ejecutivo, Herbert Diess, en una entrevista con Bloomberg Television. Si bien VW es un actor dominante en China y Europa, ha perdido oportunidades en EE.UU., donde era mucho más fuerte en las décadas de 1960 y 1970, comentó.
Diess, de 62 años, dijo que EE.UU. se está convirtiendo en un mercado automotriz electrificado bajo la presidencia de Joe Biden, quien ha propuesto un gasto de US$174.000 millones en estaciones de carga, reembolsos para los consumidores y otras medidas. Si bien VW ha programado la producción del vehículo utilitario deportivo ID.4 en Chattanooga, Tennessee, a partir del próximo año, no ha indicado si otros modelos de vehículos eléctricos se ensamblarán en el país.
VW regresará con su microbús hippie bajo un modelo eléctrico llamado ID.Buzz, y la producción comenzará el próximo año para Europa. La compañía dijo que también venderá el vehículo en EE.UU. y China.
“Muchos más” productos llegarán a EE.UU. a medida que VW reelabora su estrategia para el mercado, dijo Diess. “Haremos todo lo posible para asegurarnos de que volvemos a la posición que queremos tener como fabricante en volumen”, dijo.
